It's Like Sharpening a Sword

As you sharpen your form, your mind becomes more sharp. As the mind sharpens so does the form. Doing forms mindfully as a type of moving meditation creates a positive feed back loop that brings the mind to a sharp focus and increase the ability for concentration.

Do one thing at a time. When practicing the form put all your effort, focus and concentration on the single technique your practicing before moving on to the next. See how the whole body is engaged in that movement, see how your posture is, what part of the body moves first, where the power is coming from and how the momentum is engaged to execute the move. Slow down even more and focus on each body part one at a time as you move. Then put it all together at the proper pace.

The sharper the sword, the less effort is needed by those who
wield ​it.

Kung Fu is Learning a Holistic Way of Living

Kung Fu is a martial art, it's a great fitness regime, it works out the whole body without wearing it down but for me it's a way to connect to myself. Each technique requires that the whole body be engaged to maximize power while  minimizing effort. It requires the mind to be aware of every muscle, joint, ligament and tendon executing each move from beginning to end. From the tips of toes to the tips of the fingers, from the heel of the foot to the top of the head, the mind increases it's ability to be aware at all times, which creates the mind body connection. I use Kung Fu to be aware of my body and mind, it then becomes a moving meditation and way to center my thoughts and feelings. Through Kung fu we can develop our intuition so we can see and feel the world with deeper senses. At the higher level it becomes as much a spiritual journey as it is a physical or mental one. 

Because Kung Fu it incorporates Chinese medicine (looking at the body holistically), Taoist philosophy (concepts of yin and yang force energy) and Buddhist principles (mindfulness and ethics), it is a system human development that accesses all forms of living. Kung Fu is learning life itself.

Qigong is Essential!

There is a lot Qigong built into the Fu Jow Pai forms and workout. Why? Qigong not only helps you build internal strength, energy and stamina but it's essential for recovery. Qigong is the best way to help your muscles and tendons recover from a strenuous workout and those of you have done or are in Fu Jow know that it's intense! Whatever the exercise incorporating Qigong will not only enhance your workout but speed up recovery time.

What is Your Intention?

It's all about intention. Every move you do in a form, every pose, every posture, must have intention behind it. You must know what you're doing and why you're doing it. When you execute a move or a technique, ask yourself, what is your intention? If it's to strike, then strike with the same force and intensity you would for real. If it's to grab, then grab and understand that your opponent is NOT a willing one. That way you'll know exactly how much force, leverage and speed you need to achieve your objective. This is called being a Martial Artist. If you chose to live like a Martial Artist, then that means you chose to live life with meaning. It's not just about fighting, it's about putting purpose into everything you do. You live life to it's fullest and are aware of everything that goes on. This is the true purpose of Kung Fu. Life is made up of time, time is the what life is... Don't waste it.

My Health Mission for 2016, The Year of the Monkey

​Health is not only a physical state but a state of mind. 

The mind plays a vital role if not the most important role in your physical well being. Although diet, genetics and lifestyle can also play a pivotal part, it's the mind that regulates every cell in the body. Healthy states of mind bring about a healthy state in the body. How you feel can be determined by what you think and how you see yourself. As we age the body is always trying to achieve a state of homeostasis, that means the body always tries to maintain internal stability and a psychological equilibrium regardless of age or current health status. Environment become a key factor in aiding this process or throwing it off. Sugar, processed foods, chemicals, lack of exercise and stress all have a negative effect on the homeostasis process and that's when disease sets in. Most if not all diseases are a result of these environmental stresses. Even genetic factors may be thwarted off or slowed if we keep to a very holistic and natural diet and lifestyle. 

It is for this very reason that I've chosen to practice Chinese martial arts. Fighting aside, (but not too far aside) Chinese martial such as Tai Chi and Kung Fu were created by not only Buddhist monks, Taoist priests, who mediated daily for hours and have very holistic lives but also many were Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctors or TCM. Wong Fei Hong and his father Wong Key Yin were both two of China's most famous Kung Fu masters during the late Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1912) and prominent Chinese doctors. 

Qigong is the medicinal aspect of Chinese martial arts and a part of every form and exercise. It's combination of breath, balance and stretching that makes Chinese martial arts so effective as a health regiment as well. The focus and mindful awareness that is required to do any Chinese martial art is where the mind aspect comes into play. Put all these with the physical exertions that is required and you have a vary holistic health program that trains the breath, body, mind and spirit.

As some of you may know I've had Lyme's disease three times and I now deal with chronic Lyme's. If it were not for Kung Fu and Tai Chi, I might not be able to walk right now. Chinese martial arts has not only helped me overcome the difficulties of dealing with Lyme's, it has greatly helped the psychological factors of the disease, such as depression and anxiety. (As a native New Yorker those things were sort of built in, the Lyme's just made them word ). A long with regular meditation, I've been able to manage my Lyme's with little to no medication that can have horrible side effects as well financial ones. 

Since the practice of Kung Fu and Tai Chi has been so effective for me in dealing with these issues, it is my mission to help as many people as possible to manage and even overcome many of the health related issues that we all deal with. 

It's begins with the mind. How we see ourselves will determine how we will be and feel in our daily lives. It is very important to see yourself as healthy, vital and strong regardless of age or current heath status. We all have our issues and some or more or less severe than others. Some are easier or more difficult to deal with on a daily basis than others. But the one thing we all have in common is that or mind can be the most powerful medicine in our possession. 

Daily mental exercise like visualizing your self healthy is as important as daily physical exercise. It determines every decision we we make. What foods to eat, what to watch on TV, what actions to take in day to day activities, ow we relate to other people, etc.. A healthy thinking person will make very different choices than one who sees themselves as ailing. It's our choice how to think and feel. We have the power how to see ourselves and how to be in that viewpoint. We can choose to happy, we choose to be angry and we choose to be sorrowful. The good news is, as human beings we have the power to choose at any given moment but we must have the awareness to be able to make that choice wisely and how to behave in that moment. Our mental state determines our actions and our choices, so lets choose good ones. I'm am by no means an expert at this and many times make the wrong choice but every time I make a mistake, it brings that much closer to being aware enough to do better the next time. 

I hope and wish great health and vitality to all and hope that you choose to see yourself as a healthy and vital human being. It's not a panacea and no 'quick fix' but it's the beginning to a road of hard work and makes the hard work fun! That way it doesn't feel like work at all.

The Higher Levels of forms

At the higher level of doing forms, is the endeavor to connect the heart and mind and express that through the form. How do we accomplish this? It starts by examining every move, every posture and every technique to it's smallest detail. In that way we gain an awareness of not only the body but the mind. So the question becomes, not only, what are the techniques within the form doing but where is your mind while you are doing it?

Everything can be a meditation, if you're fully present and aware.

Kung Fu is Not Just a Workout, It's a Practice!

Kung Fu is not just a workout, it's a practice. It's good to have goals but the goal of Kung Fu is more in the doing and not as much in the receiving. We practice for the sake of practicing, which allows us to be present and receive joy and proficiency while we're doing it. Many fitness routines don't always require a mindful presence, that's why you can watch TV on a treadmill. 

Kung Fu's reward is in doing Kung Fu, so we are all masters while we're practicing. It requires you to be present and aware, to correctly see everything going on while you're doing it. This not only develops the mind-body connection, it developed our ability to pay attention, to ourselves, to our body and the world around us. If we get distracted or lost in thought we make mistakes. This is as true in life as it is in Kung Fu Practice. Life is made of moments, Kung Fu trains our brain to pay attention to those moments otherwise we miss out on life.

Mind Training!

One of the most difficult parts of Kung Fu training is that 50% of it is training the mind. Most people who come to a gym to workout don't want to be there. That's why there are TV's in front of treadmills. Training the mind to be present and aware can be rigorous but the benefit is that you fully experience life! 
Kung Fu is a lifestyle. Take what you learn in class into your life and live every moment.

Practice Kung Fu as an act of compassion toward the self. Kung Fu nourishes the body and purifies the mind so they can be seen as one. As compassion toward the self grows, compassion toward others also grows. 

Practice Kung Fu forms as an act of awareness. I'm aware of my hands and feet moving, I'm aware of body shifting, I am aware of my breath in coordination with my movements. As awareness grows, awareness for all beings grows. 

Awareness and compassion, body and mind, heaven and earth, Kung Fu and Zen, there is no separation.
